Liquid Gold (plant based oil); Nature's Gift to Our Skin
Contrary to what many may think, plant oils, that are free of added synthetics, are the purest, most effective way to solve and address skin concerns.
As it relates to skin, keep in mind that not all plant oils are the same. When adding oil products to your beauty routine, consider botanicals based on your skin type and or issues.
Plant seed oils are packed with essential fatty acids, linoleic and oleic acids, vitamins and minerals that are great for your skin. The right oil can penetrate the layers of your skin and effectively trap in water/moisture while keeping toxins and other harmful impurities out. Let's discuss some of these powerhouse properties.
The polyunsaturated fatty acids; the Omega-3s
The Omega-3, 6 and 9 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats. Our body does not produce this type of fat, yet it is an essential fat. These fatty acids play a critical role in normal skin function and appearance. They support the skin’s natural oil barrier without which your skin cannot maintain moisture. This may result in skin that is inflamed, dry and susceptible to pimples (black and whiteheads). With the presence of these essential fatty acids, your skin will be hydrated, supple with a glowing youthful appearance.
Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
Our body creates what is called free radicals as a response to environmental pollutants. These free radicals can wreak havoc on our skin. They cause inflammation and break down our skin’s collagen causing unwelcome skin issues, such as wrinkles, fine lines, blemishes, dark spots and aged looking skin. Antioxidants are chemicals that prevent or mitigate the effects of these free radicals. Some antioxidants like Vitamin C can stimulate collagen production.
Inflammation of the skin can disrupt the skin's natural renewal process. The anti-inflammatory properties contained in Omega-3 fatty acids can stimulate anti-inflammatory action to fight against free radicals. Antioxidants also work to reduce inflammation thereby further protecting the skin from the damage of free radicals and environmental stressors resulting in healthy, even toned beautiful skin.
Last but not least, the abundance of vitamins and minerals contained in plant based oils are beneficial to skin health. Some oils (non comedogenic) are useful in controlling the production of sebum, which can be helpful with skin issues such as acne.
Linoleic and Oleic acids
Vitamin F is not really a “vitamin”. In fact it is the term used to describe two fats, one of which is linoleic acid. Linoleic acid's job is to protect and lock in moisture. It has been found that acne prone skin is lower in linoleic acid, hence the presence of linoleic acid can be beneficial in fighting acne and inflammation. Oleic acid like its partner linoleic acid traps water and locks in moisture. It also supports the restoration of your skin’s naturally producing sebum with its anti-inflammatory properties. It easily penetrates the skin without clogging your pores, resulting in smooth, healthy, youthful skin. The above are just some of the beneficial properties of plant based oils for your skin. You can use it as a moisturizer in the mornings and at night. If your skin over produces oil, try applying only at night, when your skin produces less sebum. It is a great prep before applying your favorite foundation for a luxurious and smooth application.
But wait, plant based seed oils are not only beneficial to the skin, but hair too. That’s a subject for another blog. Stay tuned Vintage Beauties.
