Natural Versus Organic Cosmetics - Sabyolé Beauté

Often while shopping for cosmetics, the words natural and organic show up.  But what do those words represent? Is it a guarantee that one product is more superior than the other?  What does the regulatory entity have to say about this?

The cosmetics industry is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

According to the FDA’s website.

“FDA has not defined the term “natural” and has not established a regulatory definition for this term in cosmetic labeling.”

This translates to mean that cosmetic companies are left to decide what “natural” is and are free to use it on labels without having to meet any regulatory requirements. Therefore, it is primarily used as a marketing tool not an indication of quality or safety.  In fact, it is not even an expression of dictionary-definition fact.

What does the word organic mean in cosmetics? Again we refer to what the FDA’s website states.

“FDA also does not have regulations for the term "organic" for cosmetics.” (See fda.gov)

The word organic is also used as a marketing tools on cosmetic labels, despite containing synthetic ingredients or not being “organically grown” due to the lack of clear regulatory definitions to these words.  When the standards for organic foods started in 2000, the secretary of agriculture (Dan Glickman) stated that “The organic label is a marketing tool.”  He also stated that it was not indicative of quality.  So basically the facial moisturizer, body lotion, facial oil or toner may not be “organic” according to the expectations of the consumer.  Now, this is not to say that a product claiming to be natural or organic is not good or safe, consumers just need to have a better understanding of what is in their cosmetics before using it on their skin or hair.
